Growing Healthy Futures:
Garden-to-Table Learning Initiative
The Growing Healthy Futures program is a partnership between IMMERGE and Middle Tennessee Early Learning Center (MTELC). Our garden-to-table initiative provides hands-on learning experiences that teach children where food comes from, how to make healthy choices, and how to care for the environment through gardening, nutrition education, and outdoor learning.
Students ages 6 weeks through 12 years old participate in gardening, nutrition education, cooking activities, and outdoor experiential learning. Through planting, growing, harvesting, and tasting fresh foods, children develop healthy habits, confidence, leadership skills, and a deeper connection to nature and wellness.
The program supports the whole child by integrating STEM learning, literacy, sensory exploration, environmental stewardship, and social-emotional development into hands-on garden experiences.
• Plant and care for vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers
• Learn about healthy eating and nutrition
• Harvest fresh produce from the garden
• Participate in cooking and tasting activities
• Explore science and nature through hands-on learning
• Learn about pollinators and environmental stewardship
• Practice teamwork, responsibility, and leadership skills
Parents, volunteers, educators, and community partners play an important role in sustaining our Growing Healthy Futures garden program. Families are encouraged to participate in planting days, harvest celebrations, cooking demonstrations, garden maintenance projects, and wellness activities that strengthen the connection between healthy living, education, and community engagement.
We welcome volunteers and community supporters who are passionate about helping children learn through hands-on gardening, nutrition education, and outdoor experiences. Through partnerships, donations, volunteer support, and community involvement, we are creating a lasting outdoor classroom that supports healthy futures for children and families throughout our community.
